The second-story deck at the front of the school is accessible through the building and showcases three green roof sections for education and enjoyment.

Lightweight engineered soil is the last component added before the vegetation. A depth of 4" is spread over filter fabric, raked, compacted with a roller, and watered in preparation to be planted.

After the excess filter fabric is trimmed and the soil is packed, level, and moist, planting can begin. All Seasons SEDUM TILE® prevegetated mats are used for this project. This mix of Sedums provides interest all year with seasonal foliage and flower changes.

The 10" x 20" TILE® are easy to handle and quick to place. These roofing professionals are very comfortable with the process.

The coconut fiber base of the SEDUM TILE® can be cut to fit using a sharp knife or scissors. The sedums can take a little abuse, and will recover quickly.

After planting the TILE®, it is important to water the area well. This helps settle the TILE®, reduces air gaps, and provides moisture to the roots until they can establish themselves into the media below.

Each green roof section takes only about half an hour to place the SEDUM TILE®. All 375 square feet is quickly planted in one morning.

One of the obvious benefits of SEDUM TILE® is the instant coverage. Since this school was completed in late summer, not much time was allowed for the plants to grow out prior to building occupancy.

No permanent irrigation is installed, but a hose bib is available on the deck if needed during root establishment or long periods of dry hot weather. Watering needs should be minimal as should be maintenance in general.
